A man Anuj Sharma threw acid at his wife Parul Sharma during a fight. The two got married in 2023 but she soon left him due to some dispute. Recently, she revisited his place with her aunt, presumably to talk about separation or take her things like jewelry, personal items. At that time the two got into a fight and he threw acid on her. The aunt sitting next to her also got hurt (Source: PTI).
Most media houses such as Republic, The Week, The Print have run the news as it is from PTI news wire service without attributing their own thoughts or questions. This is true for all cases of gender based violence. Only report, no analysis, no follow up. Because media in general do not care to give any thoughts to women’s rights. Women are seen as victims or subjects of govt policy or NGO’s beneficiaries or corporate’s CSR initiatives.
At Women News, journalism meets feminism. We ask questions and hope our readers will think and critique the state of women in India.
We ask, from where did the man suddenly find acid? Did he already prepare for the attack? If yes, then what kind of country is this where a woman visiting her husband is met with such pre-meditated vicious attack?
The man is arrested as per the reports, but he is likely to get bail soon. What about justice to the wife? Will she be paid a compensations for bodily injury, mental trauma, loss of opportunities in life?
In the foreign countries such men would be made to pay millions of dollars in compensation to the wife in a civil case.
No wonder India is called world’s 4th most dangerous place to be a woman.
