
Ballia (UP), Sep 17 (PTI) A doctor couple running a private clinic in Risra here were on Sunday arrested for alleged medical negligence leading to the death of a pregnant woman and her child during delivery, police said.
An employee of the clinic has also been arrested in connection with the case, they added.
In his complaint, the deceased’s husband Chandan Prasad said he admitted his wife Poonam Devi to the clinic for delivery on Saturday evening, Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohammad Faheem Qureshi said.
However, due to the negligence of the doctor couple and their employee, his wife and newborn child died during labour, Prasad alleged in his complaint.
Based on Prasad’s complaint, a case was registered against doctor Vinay Kumar Singh, his wife, who is also a doctor and a male employee of the clinic, the DSP said.
An investigation has been launched into the matter, he added.
Prasad resided with his wife in Sonapali village of Nagara police station area, the police said.
About Maternal Mortality: Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) is the number of women who die during child birth. In ancient times, it was common that women would die in child birth but with advancement in medical science the incidences have gone down. MMR of India for the period 2018-20, as per the report of the national Sample Registration system (SRS) data is 97/100,000 live births, declining by 33 points, from 130/ 100,000 live births in 2014-16 (UNICEF).
As per UN MMEIG 2020 report, “Trends in maternal mortality 2000 to 2020”, MMR of India has declined from 384 in 2000 to 103 in 2020 whereas Global MMR has declined from 339 in 2000 to 223 in 2020. The average annual rate of reduction (ARR) in global MMR during the 2000-2020 periods was 2.07% while India’s MMR has declined by 6.36%, which is higher than the global decline (Government of India, PIB Press Release).
