A case of violence against women, acid attack and knife wounds, in Andhra Pradesh. A 28-year-old man Ganesh attacked 23-year-old woman Gautami with acid, and stabbed her with a knife multiple times, because she broke off their relationship and decided to get married to someone else.
As per various media reports, Gautami works at a beauty parlour. She was alone at home when Ganesh, her ex-boyfriend or lover, came to have a talk with her. It is not clear whether she invited him to have a talk or he entered forcefully though it is clear from the circumstances that he arrived at her home with bathroom cleaning acid and a knife which indicates that he came with the intention to harm her. It appears their conversation turned into an argument which then led to the attack.
It is not hard to imagine that their conversation turned heated because he in sense of entitlement could not accept and respect her decision to end their relation. With their patriarchal and hyper-masculine mindset, men cannot take no from a woman. They believe they must own her like an object and if they cannot own her, they kill her or disfigure her face or perpetrate some form of violence on her like revenge porn, revenge rape and so on.
The incident took at Pyarampalle village of Gurramkonda mandal in Annamayya district of Andhra Pradesh on Friday, the Valentine’s Day morning. The good part is, Gautami has survived the attack and is in the hospital on the way to recovery. Ganesh ran off after the attack, and apparently tried to commit suicide himself, but was quickly caught by local youth on the outskirts of the village within 15 minutes of the escape. Gautami’s wedding with another man is scheduled to take place on April 29. Her parents informed the police that the accused Ganesh had been pestering Gautami to marry him. We do not know whether Gautami’s wedding will go on as planned or will this incident take a toll on her future plans.
